The February 2013 Nor'easter - The Real Deal

The Blizzard of 2013 in the northeast lived up to it's billing and will go down in the record books as one of the more intense winter storms since the Blizzard of February 1978. The 1978 storm still holds in the top spot in a number of categories, especially duration. Had the 2013 storm been of the same duration as the 1978 storm,it likely would have shattered snowfall records and paralyzed southern New England.

Most of Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and coastal Maine received at least 24 niches of snow, and a significant portion within that area received more than 30 inches. Snow fell at the rate of 5 to 6 inches an hour accompanied by thunder and lightning as convective snow bands rotated across Connecticut.

48 hours snowfall amounts ending 7:00 am EST 2/10/2013
The snow was whipped about by winds gusting frequently to hurricane force. Some of the wind gusts reported are:

Gust (mph)                 Location

83                               Cuttyhunk, MA
82                               Westport, CT
81                               Middlesex, CT
77                               Hyannis, MA
76                               Logan International Airport, Boston, MA
75                               Penobscot, ME

The winds combined with the heavy, wet snow brought down trees and power lines. At the peak 660,000 customers were without power in nine states. The winds also produced coastal flooding.

Portland, ME received a total of 30.1 inches of snow from this storm, a new all-time record. Boston's Logan Airport measured 14.8 inches of snow on February 9, a new daily record, and a total of 24.9 inches for the storm, the fifth highest on record. The highest unofficial report was 40 inches in Hamden, CT.

Some of the higher storm total amounts reported by CoCoRaHS observers in each state are:

Snowfall       Station No.              Station Name

34.0               CT-NH-9               Milford 2.9 ESE
32.7               ME-CM-7             Gorham 4.9 NNW
30.5               NH-CR-1              East Wakefield 1.2 SE

  1. What's the best way of taking a core measurement in really deep snow? I pushed my gauge down until it hit the ground, packing the snow in, but it was really hard to push it down enough, and to get it out. I've currently got 23" ( down from 27" yesterday). Thanks!

  2. Rebecca, good question - not one many of us have to ever worry about. The best way to do this when you have that much snow is to dig a large hole or trench in the snow (straight sides if you can) at a location that represents your snow depth. Dig down to your measuring surface (snowboard or ground). Starting at the top of the snow near the edge of your hole, push your outer cylinder down until the bottom of the cylinder is even with the snow surface (12 inches). Then, take a spatula or other flat instrument and cover the opening of the cylinder so you capture the snow. Now, remove it from the hole. Be sure to wipe off any snow or ice on the outside of the cylinder, and then dump the contents into another container such as a bucket. Repeat until you reach your measuring surface. When you are done, melt and measure what is in the bucket and report that as your SWE of Total Snow and Ice on the Ground. Good luck, and thanks for taking this very important measurement.

  3. Thanks! Maybe you can add a slide to the training for this.
