A Late Winter in the Heartland

Things were looking pretty dismal for snow lovers in the central U.S. through the end of January. With the exception of North Dakota and the Ohio Valley most of the region had received than 75 percent of normal snowfall by the end of January.

Two major storms rolled through the central U.S. in the past ten days producing copious amounts of snow. This last storm closely followed the path of the previous storm, laying down snow from Texas to New England.

72-hour snowfall ending the morning of February 28, 2013.

As of this morning, snow covers close to 50 percent of the lower 48 states.

Compared to the snowfall percent of mean map through January 31, the seasonal snowfall map as of this morning shows that much of the region has from 75 to 100 percent of normal snowfall or higher. However, there are some notable "holes" in the pattern east of the Rockies, in north central Iowa, and eastern Illinois through northern Indiana.

However, the snow season is not yet over. March can often bring significant snowstorms. The outlook for the first half of March is for a high probability for colder than normal weather across the central U.S. according to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.  It appears winter will hang on for a while longer.

"Bigfoot" Update, and More On the Way

Surface map at 9:00 a.m. CST February 23rd.
The storm that brought a wide swath of snow to the central U.S. is departing the northern Great Lakes this morning.  The 72-hour snow accumulation map this morning shows the expansive area of snow produced by this storm. Showers and thunderstorms are occurring ahead of the cold front that is now moving off the east and Gulf Coasts.
72-hour snowfall ending the morning of February 23rd.
High pressure will keep the weather relatively quiet over the nation's midsection this weekend, but weather eyes are already watching another system that could bring significant snow to areas that were hit by this week's storm. There is a potential for another 8 to 12 inches of snow of parts of the Central Plains and western Midwest. This system is still over the Pacific and models will have a better grasp on the storm development once the system moves ashore.  Monitor your local NWS web page to follow updates on the forecast during the weekend.

A "Bigfoot" of a Storm

48-hour snowfall accumulation ending this morning.
The winter storm that brought over a foot of snow and badly needed moisture to the Central Plains has an impressive footprint, with snow from Phoenix to Petosky over the last 48 hours. The storm is still producing, and several inches of snow will accumulate from the Michigan Upper Peninsula southeast into Ohio. The highest 24-hour totals reported by CoCoRaHS were from observers in central Kansas. However, the area of heaviest snow was rather broad and extended into southern Nebraska and western Missouri with amounts of 10 inches and more common. South of the main snow areas, freezing rain glazed streets, trees, and power lines from Arkansas northeast through central Indiana. Ice accumulations of one quarter to one half inch were reported by CoCoRaHS observers in Arkansas this morning.

CoCoRaHS observations for the morning of February 22 showing highest snow totals.

A weak low pressure system was centered over western Illinois this morning and will continue to move northeast.  An arc of precipitation extends from the northern Great Lakes into the central Appalachians. Winter weather advisories are in effect for a large portion of this area today.

Snow from the Desert Southwest to the Plains

500 Millibar map for 5:00 PST February 21, 2013
Many residents of southern Arizona experienced a rare event on Wednesday - snow! The upper  level low associated with the storm now spinning over the Central Plains produced snow from Phoenix to Tuscon.  On Tuesday night the snow was further north in and around Flagstaff, but the cold pushed south early Wednesday. Winter storm warnings remained in effect for southeastern Arizona through late last night with significant accumulations above 2500 feet.  Snow is not unprecedented in Tucson. Tuscon recorded a trace on February 27, 2011, and measured a half inch of snow or more on five days om January-February 1990.

While most of the precipitation Phoenix was rain, snow and graupel was also observed. Snow covered the roads around Scottsdale coated the Superstition Mountains outside of Phoenix.

This morning the low pressure center is located over western Texas, and winter precipitation was falling from  the Texas Panhandle to the Mississippi River, and north through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota. The footprint of this system is rather impressive. Snow has been falling at the rate of two to three inches per hours in Kansas and western Missouri, occasionally accompanied by thunder and lightning.  If you are in an area affected by this storm, be sure to keep abreast of the latest conditions through your local NWS website or NOAA weather radio.

Northern California Tornado

Surface weather map for 1:00 p.m. PST February 19, 2013
A low pressure sytem pushed into northern California off of the Pacific yesterday. The push of cold air south of the low triggered generated enough lift and instabilty to trigger thunderstorms in northern California, one of which spawned a small tornado. The tornado touched down about 100 miles north of Sacramento btween the towns of Corning and Red Bluff sometime around 1:30 p.m. PST.

The National Weather Service office in Sacramento sent out a team to survey the damage.  the found damage to a barn roof, and rater the tornado as EF0, with top winds aaournd 74 mph.

Report Available on June 2012 Derecho

On June 29, 2012 thunderstorms in northern Illinois and Indiana evolved into a destructive derecho. The derecho traveled 700 miles through 10 states. Winds gusting to 80 mph snapped trees and power lines, and 4 million people were without power for a week or more. Thirteen people lost their lives, mostly due too falling trees. Oppressive heat and humidity settled in over the affected area in the wake of the storms, and another 34 heat-related deaths occurred in the days after the storm. Without power residents were left without air conditioning.

This event happened to be the subject of my first post for the CoCoRaHS blog and you can read more about the derecho in that post. You also read more about this derecho in a report recently released by the National Weather Service. This report, called a Service Assessment, is a type of report that the NWS often produces after weather events with major impacts. These are events that result in multiple fatalities, numerous injuries requiring hospitalization, significant impact on the economy of a large area or population, extensive national public interest or media coverage, or an unusual level of attention to NWS operations (performance of systems or adequacy of warnings, watches, and forecasts). Their purpose is, in general, to evaluate the response and performance of the NWS in operations related to the event.  The report also identifies best practices and makes recommendations on improving products and operations.  As part of the assessment, surveys of the general public were conducted to help assess the timeliness and effectiveness of the warnings.

As you might expect, there were a number of findings, recommendations, and best practices identified in the report.  Many of the findings dealt with the forecast process (models) and NWS procedures during the event. In general, the event was poorly forecast in advance by the forecast models, but warnings were accurate and wording emphasized the heightened threat from these storms. Three findings, in particular, caught my attention:

  • Many Weather forecast Offices (WFOs) had some difficulty keeping up with the rapid forward progress of the derecho, which was approximately 60 mph. This resulted in minimal lead time near the western fringes of several warning polygons issued for this event.
  • Despite the use of enhanced wording in many of the warnings, nearly everyone interviewed was surprised by the intensity of the winds with this derecho. As a result, most people surveyed did not take any special precautions as the storms moved through their area.
  • Nearly all conversations with members of the media highlighted the usefulness of Facebook and Twitter in reaching the public and in receiving observations and damage reports throughout the viewing area.

You can download the report at this link:  The Historic Derecho of June 29, 2012.

Northern Blizzard, Southern Tornadoes

Surface map at 6:00 a.m. February 10.
While most attention this weekend was focused on the aftermath of the northeastern snowstorm, Mother Nature was not taking the weekend off. An intense storm system spinning over the Central Plains produced blizzard conditions and a swath of 12 to 18 inches of snow from central South Dakota through west-central Minnesota.  Severe thunderstorms erupting ahead of cold front trailing from the low dropped tornadoes on southern Mississippi, including an EF4 in Hattiesburg.

The snowstorm in the Central Plains shut down road travel in much of eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota as the heavy snow was whipped around by 30 to 40 mph winds. High winds in the wake of the storm caused blowing snow that kept some roads closed through this morning, including parts of Interstate 94.  Some of the two-day snowfall amounts reported by CoCoRaHS observers include:

AMOUNT    STATION           LOCATION
18.3              SD-DY-9     Webster 8.6 NW
17.5              MN-OT-6     Pelican Rapids 6.3 NNW
17.0              MN-OT-3     Battle Lake 2S
13.6              SD-CD-5      Watertown 7.5 NNE
12.5              ND-CS-32     Durbin 5.4 WNW
12.1              ND-RC-8      Abercrombie 0.2 NW
12.0              SD-DG-2       Armour 4.6 W

Severe storms rolled through western Mississippi during Sunday morning. As the cold front began to stall later in the day, supercell thunderstorms developed in the warm, unstable air east of the cold front aided by strong wind shear.  The first tornado touched down in Lawrence County, MS shortly before 4:00 p.m.  This tornado lifted after moving through Marion and Lamar Counties. Soon after, however, this same parent thunderstorm spawned the tornado that moved through Hattiesburg. This EF4 tornado caused major damage in Hattiesburg.  There were a total of 87 people injured from these storms, but fortunately there were no fatalities. For the latest updates on this severe weather, including maps, radar images, and damage information visit the NWS Jackson, MS web page.

In addition to the tornadoes, the thunderstorms also produced heavy rain and flash flooding from Mississippi into Alabama. CoCoRaHS observers reported 5 to 6 inches of rain in the Hattiesburg areaCoCoRaHS observers in Wayne County, MS reported 6 to 7.5 inches of rain, with MS-WY-2 recording a 24-hour total of 7.50 inches and the observer at MS-WY-1 reporting 6.34 inches.

The February 2013 Nor'easter - The Real Deal

The Blizzard of 2013 in the northeast lived up to it's billing and will go down in the record books as one of the more intense winter storms since the Blizzard of February 1978. The 1978 storm still holds in the top spot in a number of categories, especially duration. Had the 2013 storm been of the same duration as the 1978 storm,it likely would have shattered snowfall records and paralyzed southern New England.

Most of Connecticut, Rhode Island, eastern Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, and coastal Maine received at least 24 niches of snow, and a significant portion within that area received more than 30 inches. Snow fell at the rate of 5 to 6 inches an hour accompanied by thunder and lightning as convective snow bands rotated across Connecticut.

48 hours snowfall amounts ending 7:00 am EST 2/10/2013
The snow was whipped about by winds gusting frequently to hurricane force. Some of the wind gusts reported are:

Gust (mph)                 Location

83                               Cuttyhunk, MA
82                               Westport, CT
81                               Middlesex, CT
77                               Hyannis, MA
76                               Logan International Airport, Boston, MA
75                               Penobscot, ME

The winds combined with the heavy, wet snow brought down trees and power lines. At the peak 660,000 customers were without power in nine states. The winds also produced coastal flooding.

Portland, ME received a total of 30.1 inches of snow from this storm, a new all-time record. Boston's Logan Airport measured 14.8 inches of snow on February 9, a new daily record, and a total of 24.9 inches for the storm, the fifth highest on record. The highest unofficial report was 40 inches in Hamden, CT.

Some of the higher storm total amounts reported by CoCoRaHS observers in each state are:

Snowfall       Station No.              Station Name

34.0               CT-NH-9               Milford 2.9 ESE
32.7               ME-CM-7             Gorham 4.9 NNW
30.5               NH-CR-1              East Wakefield 1.2 SE
27.6               RI-PR-20              West Glocester 3.4 SE
27.4               MA-MD-2             Acton 1.3 SW
26.0               NY-SF-18             Shoreham 1.8 SSE
